Mac running slow after installing High Sierra

The Great High Sierra Slow Down

Apple seem to have cranked up the notifications to install the latest and greatest version of macOS, High Sierra. It seems that even though the software has been released since September 2017, Apple are now getting really keen to install the latest version of their operating system. We suspect that they have got to a point now with the the last couple of versions where all the major bugs have been ironed out and, in terms of security, they really want you to have the most up-to-date software on your iMac, Mac mini or iMac.

Unfortunately installing the latest version of macOS, High Sierra, comes at a cost. If your computer already has an SSD hard drive installed then you’re probably OK. If however your computer has a rotational drive, and specifically a 2.5″ drive, as found in Mac minis, pre 2012 MacBooks and post 2012 iMacs, then you have a problem.

We have found that unless your system is super clean and tidy and/or you have done a totally fresh installation of your Mac and not restored from a Time Machine backup, your whole computer can end up running very very slowly. In the last few weeks alone we have been inundated with customers having such problems and it only seems to be becoming more of a problem.

Luckily there is a solution! The installation of an SSD hard drive into your computer completely solves the slowness of your computer. It seems that Sierra and High Sierra are heavily optimised to run on an SSD, and as soon one is installed into your system, it suddenly starts to function properly again. We’re not kidding when we say you can expect a 10x boost in system performance when an SSD is installed in to your Mac.

The good news is we have now mastered the installation of SSDs into every compatible variant of the Mac, and as long as the SSDĀ  we are installing is larger than the amount of data you currently have loaded on your hard drive, we can easily perform a migration of your existing files, applications and settings to your new drive.

If you live in Exeter or are able to drop of your Mac at out workshop on the Iron Bridge (Lower North Street), then we are able to perform most installations and migrations on the same day. If you are South of Exeter and are close to Newton Abbot, Teignmouth, Torquay, Paignton, Totnes, Ashburton or Buckfastleigh, then are able to offer a collect and return service and may even be able to upgrade your Mac on-site. If you live further afield, we are happy for you to ship your computer to us for the upgrade.
